A quick, honest disclosure. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay, and it never changes what we recommend. The free tools below earn us nothing, and we list them first because for most people they are all you need.

The free tools we actually use

You do not have to spend a cent to build a great library. These are the free tools we point to throughout our guides, and we earn nothing from them. Start here.

Back up your library so you never lose it

A single hard drive will fail eventually, so the one paid step we genuinely urge on everyone is an automatic offsite backup. If you only do one thing on this page, do this. It follows the simple 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two kinds of storage, with one of them offsite.

ServiceBest for
BackblazeThe simplest set-and-forget option. Backs up your whole computer for a flat monthly fee.Check it out →
pCloudCloud storage plus backup, with an unusual one-time lifetime plan if you would rather not pay monthly.Check it out →
IDriveBacks up multiple computers and drives under one plan. Good for a household.Check it out →

Not sure which? Backblaze is the easiest place to start. If you want a lifetime option instead of a subscription, look at pCloud. On a Mac, remember that Time Machine already handles your local copy for free, so you only need one of these for the offsite half.

Storage and drives for your master library

Your master library needs one permanent home with room to grow. A thousand songs is roughly 7 GB as MP3 or 30 GB as lossless FLAC, so give yourself far more space than you think you need. For most people an external drive is plenty. If you want the whole household to reach the library and you like the idea of running your own music server, a NAS is the gold standard. Turning a pile of files into a library you actually own is a project in itself; Own Your Music walks through it step by step.

Hear the difference: headphones and a DAC

Here is the honest truth from our audio quality guide: once you are past 256 to 320 kbps, better headphones change how your music sounds far more than any extra bitrate does. If you want an upgrade you will actually hear, this is where to spend, not on chasing higher file numbers. And if you want to understand exactly what those numbers mean, The Bitrate Bible breaks down every format and bitrate.

Go lossless: streaming and buying

Converting a stream preserves the stream's quality but does not create true lossless. If you want a genuinely lossless master, it has to come from a lossless source. These are the services worth knowing, whether you want to stream in hi-res or buy files you keep forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the links on this page affiliate links?

Some are. If you buy through a paid service or product linked here, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay, and it never changes what we recommend. The free tools we list earn us nothing and are listed first on purpose.

Do I have to buy anything to build a good library?

No. The free tools at the top handle converting, tagging, organizing, playing, and even streaming your own library. The paid picks are optional upgrades for backup, storage, and sound quality.

If I only do one paid thing, what should it be?

Set up an offsite backup. It is the cheapest insurance against losing a library you spent time building, and a dead hard drive is a matter of when, not if.

How do you choose what to recommend?

We recommend what we would actually use, and we point to the free option whenever it is the right one. A page that steered you toward whatever paid the most would not be worth reading, and we would rather keep your trust than earn one extra click.
